Bartering and Trading in a Down Economy -
Info. provided by MSNBC and video provided by The Today Show
The art of the barter has returned in America.
Not that it ever completely vanished from the underground economy but the age old practice involving one person trading skills or property in exchange for the same from another has become "the new cash."
"USA Today" reports postings in the bartering section of Craigslist jumped 100-percent between January of 2008 and the first month of this year.
The company says bartering is especially hot in areas where foreclosures are high.
Another website that connects people willing to swap and trade, U-Exchange.com, says it had more than a million page views between mid-January and mid-February, about triple the number recorded last year.
Roger Staiger, a professor at Johns Hopkins University's business school says barter "absolutely thrives in bad times." He says he recently helped a Denver, Colorado developer restructure a loan and was given a Colorado ski trip in exchange.
