Naughty or Nice?! A Holiday Recipe Makeover

When it comes to holiday-time calories, nothing adds to your bottom line as much as this rich punch. But only a scrooge would give up eggnog altogether, so check out the two versions below. One for those feeling naughty this year, and one for those feeling nice!

The Naughty

(42% of Calories from fat)

Makes: 18 (½-cup) servings.

Ingredients

2 1/2 cups plus 2 tablespoons whole milk

1 cup half-and-half

1 (4-inch) piece vanilla bean, split lengthwise

6 eggs, lightly beaten

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup bourbon

1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

1 quart French vanilla ice cream, softened

Sweetened whipped cream (optional)

Freshly grated nutmeg (optional)

Preparation

Combine first 3 ingredients in a large saucepan; stir well. Cook over medium-low heat until thoroughly heated (do not boil). Combine eggs and sugar in a medium bowl; stir with a wire whisk until well blended. Gradually stir about one-fourth of hot mixture into egg mixture; add to remaining hot mixture, stirring constantly. Cook mixture over low heat, stirring constantly, 20 minutes or until mixture is slightly thickened and reaches 160°.

Remove mixture from heat; stir in bourbon and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg. Let cool. Cover and chill 3 hours. Remove and discard vanilla bean; stir in ice cream just before serving. If desired, top each serving with sweetened whipped cream and sprinkle with nutmeg.

Makes: 13 (½-cup) servings.

Ingredients

3 large eggs

3 large egg whites

5 1/2 cup(s) low-fat milk

1/2 cup(s) sugar

2 tablespoon(s) cornstarch

Salt

2 tablespoon(s) vanilla

1/2 teaspoon(s) (plus additional for sprinkling) ground nutmeg

1/3 cup(s) dark Jamaican rum (optional)

Preparation

In bowl, with whisk, beat eggs and egg whites until blended; set aside. In heavy 4-quart saucepan, with heat-safe spatula, mix 4 cups milk with sugar, cornstarch, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cook on medium-high until mixture boils and thickens slightly, stirring constantly. Boil 1 minute. Remove saucepan from heat.

Gradually whisk 1/2 cup simmering milk mixture into eggs; pour egg mixture back into milk in saucepan, whisking constantly, to make custard.

Pour custard into large bowl; stir in vanilla, nutmeg, rum, if using, and remaining 1 1/2 cups milk. Cover and refrigerate until well chilled, at least 6 hours or up to 2 days. Sprinkle eggnog with nutmeg to serve.

Using Web 2.0 Tools for House Hunters

With the advent of so many electronic means of communicating all of us are sometimes faced with information overload especially while looking for a new home.

Last month I talked about the very handy Realtor.com app for iPhone and Android. So you got this great app and you want to show you're sweetie all the cool houses you've picked out. Well, you'll have to send an email from within the app on each house you found interesting. Which is OK. But not great especially if your sweetie has been picking out houses too. Now you've both got a pile of emails and no way to organize them unless you want to kill a tree and print them ALL out.

Wouldn't it be great if you had a virtual 'notebook' of your home search instead? One centralized place for all the screen captures from from Realtor.com and other internet searches? Or maybe one that lets you add pictures you took with your cell phone camera while at an open house? Or maybe one that keeps all your text and voice notes for each house you've visited? And one that can be shared with your sweetie that let's them add stuff too? Well, you can with a bit of free software called Evernote.

This handy little app is available for your Mac, PC, iPhone and Android phone. And it SYNCS between all your devices so your notes are updated no matter what device your on. House hunting just got a whole lot easier and paperless!

Use Evernote when you're starting your house hunt to create lists of any must haves like hardwood floors, a bonus room or fireplace along with a list of would-be-nice like granite, pool, large backyard. As you search the internet clip info on the homes you like. Then you'll have them all in a central spot always available online, able to sync to multiple devices. When you're ready to go see the homes share your notebook with me, your agent. I can easily pop into Evernote to see which homes to make appointments for, and I can add a note to your notebook listing open house visits with times, addresses for homes you might like.

Once we start visiting homes you're interested in fire up your Evernote app on your phone to keep track of what you are viewing. Take snapshots, text and voice notes of each place you visit, so you won’t forget any important details.

Once you're back home from hunting you can easily review all the information on your computer. Evernote syncs your account between all the devices you use. Now you can start to narrow your decision down to THE one or make a list follow-up questions you have related to specific properties for me, your agent!

If we go under contract, we can even use Evernote to save pertinent emails and documents in one spot. Evernote will import emails out of any web mail or Outlook with a simple click. You can highlight portions of text and/or images on the computer screen and clip them. If it's a webpage an automatic link to the site is permanently recorded. You might need a premium account if you start uploading more than 40MB per month but at $5 a month, it's not going to break the bank.

How many times have you made a note and lost it? This will never happen again with Evernote. Take those post-its and put them in Evernote. When you need one, search for effortlessly. Evernote makes collecting and finding information easy.

Evernote has two types of accounts--a free version and a premium service. For most users, the free version is all you will need. The major differences between the free and premium service are upload limits (40MB per month vs. 500MB) and file synchronization (limited vs. any file type). By the way, this image of the account comparison...I clipped it using Evernote. Once I clipped it, the image was automatically stored in my Evernote account. Then I clicked over to my Evernote app on my computer, hit the Sync button and viola! There's the comparison chart I just clipped saved as a note. Now I click on the chart, click save as picture and now I have an image file which can be inserted into a blog post. Like this one! Do you remember how you used to save screenshots or images from the web? Yeah. It was a lot more work.

Veterans Day was created to honor the heroism of those who served the country. Set on Nov. 11 to honor the end of fighting in World War I, Veterans Day was meant to be observed with parades, public meetings and a brief suspension of business, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Android Jumps on Board the Realtor.com App Train

Not wanting to be outdone by iPhone, Android unveiled a Realtor.com app by Move, Inc. loaded with all the features a home shopper will want. It took 10 months but Android's free to download app has just as many bells and whistles, plus a few more that take advantage of the Android operating system.

The app provides a widget that continually surfaces and displays nearby properties on the Android’s landing screen, voice entry capabilities to save notes, and Google Street View capabilities that give users a pictorial view of the immediate area surrounding a home before investing precious time. Just like the iPhone app this one knows your exact location via GPS. By far the coolest feature IMHO is being able to “draw” with your finger an area you want to search in and even refine!

iPhone Realtor.com App Is Free & Very Useful
This app is free and it works on the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. It doesn't have any advertising on it keeping it clean looking and easy to navigate. Because it is from Realtor.com a user has access to all the same listings as the website, including listings from the Wilmington MLS. There are alot of helpful real estate apps out there but Realtor.com's app is the most comprehensive providing the user accurate and up-to-date information with a super easy search capability.

The best feature this app has is the shape search. This is fantastic for buyers who've found an area they like while driving around and want to restrict their search to that area. The buyer can draw any shape they like in the app and all the houses listed on Realtor.com will show up as pushpins on the map. Each one of the pins shown on the map will deliver more details when it is touched. It is also location based so a buyer can search where they are no matter the neighborhood. Users can also search by price range or number of bedrooms and more. Information about the homes for sale can be saved, or emailed. The app has been named one of four great iPhone apps by Money Magazine. It has been downloaded more than a million times!

Wilmington Film Studio Scores Big Budget Production
Last week local film studio, Screen Gems, was to be one of the locations for shooting "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island", a family action adventure film starring Dwayne Johnson and Oscar-winner Michael Caine. The film is being produced by New Line Cinema, a subsidiary of Warner Brothers, will spend five months in Wilmington. This will bring a nice boost to the local economy and expose some newcomers to our great city who may want to relocate here! Who wouldn't?!

The film is about a teenager who sets out on a mission with his mother’s boyfriend to find his grandfather, who is thought to be missing on a mythical island, according to Internet Movie Database. It’s slated to be released September 23, 2011. And even more exciting is that "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" will use the water tank at Screen Gems for the first time ever along with five of the ten stages at Screen Gems.

“Mysterious Island” is a sequel to “Journey to the Center of the Earth.” That movie, which was released in 2008, had a budget of $45 million and grossed $231 million worldwide. And like the first movie, “The Mysterious Island” will be shot in 3D!

Single Family Home Sales Dip in September After Rising in August according to data from the Wilmington Regional Association of REALTORS^®. Which most likely reflects the concern of the upcoming elections and family's having little time for home shopping getting the kids back into the routine of school. In looking at the past several years of market stats, when Wilmington has a slight dip in September there more often than not is a rise for October. So even though it's not the news we all want to hear, it's certainly not anything to be too startled to end any plans you may have for relocating or moving-up. Low Rates, High Inventory: A Good Time for Investing?
According to the Reuters news service, "Mortgage applications for home refinancing loans rose for the first time in six weeks, with demand jumping to its highest level since late August as homeowners reacted to record low interest rates, data from an industry group showed on Wednesday."

Home mortgage rates (averaging 4.15%) are some of the lowest on record. Combine that with a large inventory of homes for sale plus a demand for rentals and you have all the ingredients for a great time to buy an investment property.

Purchasing an investment property sounds intimidating, and it’s certainly not for everyone. As with any investment, the best approach to investing in property is to do your homework. Get your finances in order, be clear on all the costs involved, and get pre-approval so that you will know what type of property you can fit into your budget.

2010 Wilmington YMCA Triathlon

On Saturday, September 25 I did the Wilmington YMCA Sprint Triathlon again. There were over 1,300 participants in the largest single distance, one day event held anywhere between northern Virginia and Florida. I finished 189th and dang proud of it! I completed the race in 01:40:14 shaving 20 minutes off last years time! The weather was gorgeous and I had a blast doing it with so many of my friends and coworkers. The date for next years event is being decided so why not get your TRI on and start training?!

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month educates women about the importance of early detection. More and more women are getting mammograms to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages. As a result, breast cancer deaths are on the decline. Encourage the women in your life to get mammograms on a regular basis. After Foreclosure: How Soon Can You Buy?

With the rash of foreclosures across the country many people wonder exactly how a foreclosure will affect their home-buying power in the future. Chris Hutchens of Alpha Mortgage provides the following information on the waiting period most lenders follow. In all cases, borrowers must re-establish their credit, meaning they must meet minimum credit score requirements and eligibility requirements.

For buyers who’ve had a foreclosure the typical waiting period is 7 years. There is a three year exception, however, but borrowers must be able to show documentation for an extenuating circumstance, must have at least 10% for the down payment and the purchase must be for a primary residence.

Even if you didn’t go through a full foreclosure Fannie Mae has set requirements for the waiting period for Deed-In-Lieu of Foreclosure, Pre-Foreclosure and Short Sale to the same limits of:

• 2 Years – 80% Max LTV

• 4 Years – 90% Max LTV

• 7 Years – LTV Ratios Per Eligibility Matrix

And as with foreclosure, if you have a documented extenuating circumstance then you may be eligible to qualify for a two year waiting period if the Max LTV is 90%.

Area's Traditional Oyster Roast Almost Wasn't

Airlie's Annual Low Country Oyster Roast was almost an oyster-less roast due to the Gulf Coast oil spill this year. Many people might have noticed the sign just outside of the park advertising an oyster-less roast this year. That was the brainchild of event organizers who wanted to see what the public reaction would be if oysters were no longer available—ever.

In a letter on the Airlie Garden website Parks and Garden director, Jim McDaniel explains how the Gulf Coast environmental crisis almost ended our local tradition but further explains that our area has been in a coastal crisis for years.

“Airlie Gardens always has been a great resource for providing guests excellent opportunities for hands-on, quality education. This year our Oyster Roast, or Oyster-less Roast as it were, will be no different. This is a chance to focus on our own environment, right here in New Hanover County.”

The Gulf Oil spill created a 'false economy' with Airlie’s normal supplier who began charging $2 per oyster. Fortunately, McDaniel was able to find a new supplier from the Chesapeake area so the roast is on with oysters as is tradition.

This year’s Oyster Roast is Friday, October 15^th. For $75 per person you get steamed oysters, fried fish, and more to fill your belly. You can work off some of the delicious grub dancing to "The Imitations". This event ALWAYS sells out so get your tickets as they go on sale September 1. Film Festival November 11-14th

The festival is mostly centered in our historic downtown area with Thalian Hall as the focus. Films are also being shown at City Stage Theatre, Jengo’s Playhouse and other venues around town. There will be screenings of over 110 independent and international films! If you’ve never been to the film fest don’t panic. There’s something for everyone. According to the event website,

“Cucalorus screens a little bit of everything. Look for lots of shorts and docs scattered throughout the schedule. Each year, more than 100 films make it onto the lineup. There are roughly 50 narrative and documentary features and about 100 shorts. Short films range from super brief (30 seconds) to 39 minutes. Cucalorus attempts to represent the artform in all its diversity and contradiction.”

Wilmington Area Home Sales Up!
According the stats from the Wilmington Regional Association of Realtors (WRAR), area home sales are up for the 10th straight month in a row!

Home sales rose to 507 last month, compared with 416 in June 2009 according to the WRAR. And the Days on Market (DOM) time has dropped from 139 to 119 days in the same period.

The only cloudy bit of news is that there's still room for improvement in the price of homes sold. The average price of homes sold is down 7% to $238,610 from $256,616 in June 2009.

Overall, all our numbers are showing a strong market rebound compared to other areas of the country.

Secretary of the Navy Honors Wilmington With Visit

According to a press release from U.S. Representative Mike McIntyre the Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus, has accepted his invitation to come to Wilmington to celebrate the 235th birthday of the U.S. Navy aboard the USS North Carolina battleship on October 12th.

McIntyre stated, “This is a great honor that Secretary Mabus would come join us in Wilmington, not only to celebrate the Navy’s birthday, but also to honor veterans and our servicemen and women of all branches of our armed forces. Southeastern North Carolina has a great tradition of honoring those who serve and those who have served our country, and the Secretary’s visit will emphasize that service.”

The ceremony on the battleship is being hosted by the Navy League, a veterans organization that includes those engaged in maritime service, such as the Navy, Coast Guard, Marines, and Merchant Marines.

“The Secretary’s visit will also be an integral part of the ongoing celebration in anticipation of the upcoming commission of the U.S.S. Gravely as the Navy’s newest destroyer, which will be held on November 20th,” continued McIntyre, a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee.

Homebuyer Tax Credit Closing Deadline Extended

Congress passed an extension of the closing deadline for the Homebuyer Tax Credit, the Homebuyer Assistance and Improvement Act (H.R. 5623). The extension applies only to transactions that have ratified contracts in place as of April 30, 2010, that have not yet closed. The legislation is designed to create a seamless extension; the new closing deadline for eligible transactions is now September 30, 2010. There will be no gap between June 30 and the date the President signs the bill into law.

NAR worked closely with Congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle to enact this important legislation. Extending the tax credit closing deadline will help provide additional stability to real estate markets across the nation.

NHCSO out in full force on the waters for the holiday weekend

As summer quickly approaches, boats are ever increasing in numbers on the North Carolina coastal waters. A new law became effective May 1st that requires anyone in NC under the age of 26 to complete a boater safety education course before operating a boat in state waters. Officials say there are quite a few people who are unaware of the law or haven't taken the course yet. The North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission provides an easy way to get temporarily certified. Click here to take an online course and get a temporary certificate that can be used for 60 days.

In addition to spreading the word about the new boating law, the sheriff's office has two boats patrolling the waterways trying to cut down on underage drinking and trashing of the islands. Officials want the public to be aware that Masonboro Island is a protected area and that anything that is brought onto the land needs to be taken off.

Masonboro Island is the largest undisturbed barrier island along the southern part of the North Carolina coast and is located approximately five miles southeast of Wilmington, in the most populous part of the North Carolina coast. The Masonboro site is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway to the west, Masonboro Inlet to the north,
and Carolina Beach Inlet to the south.

Primitive camping is allowed on the island. Campers should use areas that have obviously been camped previously. Camping on dunes and disturbance of vegetation are not allowed. Visitors need to pack out everything they packed in.

Doughnut worth drive? 'Oh my God, yes'

Traveling 129 miles from Raleigh to the beach to try an 80-cent doughnut is to put faith in those who have come before, to trust in their ability to judge grease and glaze. Because even with rhapsodic testimonials posted across the Internet, driving that far to eat Britt's Donuts is a gamble because there are no choices. If you prefer chocolate, and your buddy eats jelly-filled, that's fine, but you can't have either. Britt's sells only fried glazed doughnuts. There is a simple reason for this, insists owner Bobby Nivens. "When we get busy," he says of his airy, hand-cut delicacies, "we don't have time for other doughnuts." After the first one, you might not either.

Sold warm and served in a white paper sack, the doughnut has welcomed visitors to the Carolina Beach boardwalk since 1939. Nivens bought the business in 1974 from originator H.L. Britt. Nivens knew the tiny kitchen well, having worked there in the '50s while in high school. Today, at 71, Nivens very literally makes the doughnuts the same way he did as a teenager. The recipe has not changed. He uses the same rolling pin.

On Saturday, the small stand opened its dual garage doors to welcome regulars and first-timers alike. Maureen Bannon, who lives near Charlotte, stopped by with friends enjoying a girls weekend to try the famous doughnut she'd heard so much about. Was it worth it? "Oh my God, yes," she says. "You'll probably see us again in a few hours."

The doughnut has devoted fans, but Nivens isn't the sort of cook who shares his techniques with friends. Only he and his wife, Maxine, know the exact recipe. One of them has to mix the dough so the employees can make the doughnuts. Even their daughter isn't privy to the doughnut's innards, although she knows where the recipe is written down in case anything happens to the secret-keepers. Nivens dreamed years ago of expanding his deep-fried empire to include shops in other cities, but he eventually decided against the plan. Money, he says, isn't everything. Plus he and Maxine enjoy their time off, which is pretty much October through March.

The shop opens at 8:30 a.m. every day during the summer. It closes each night when business slows, and Nivens never shuts the garage doors if there are people in line.

With Spring in full effect travel is starting to be at the top of the to-do list. This doesn't necessarily have to be a lengthy trek through the Himalaya's or a 20 hour flight to Hawaii. A quick weekend getaway is becoming the new pseudo vacation for many would-be travelers. This weeks Blog features ways to stay in shape and at times, have fun while doing it! With weather like this, who can resist not going outside?!

1. Find a friend (or a few friends) who is/are willing to have a go at getting in shape with you. Support each other, work out together, and watch the other's back. Friends can help make tedious activities a little less stressful.

2. Avoid stressful workouts. Running for two or three hours a day may be great for your heart (assuming it doesn't explode), but it will cause stress levels to rise if you don't enjoy running. Instead, try to find an activity that you would enjoy doing for a longer period of time.

3. Find something fun that keeps you on your feet. Basketball, tennis, soccer, capoeira, martial arts, and dance dance revolution may not give you the perfect body, but will all get your blood pumping and keep you moving while doing nothing but playing.

4. Set aside time for your workouts with your partner(s). Make sure the times are good for everyone, and reschedule if you need to. Get in the habit of doing it regularly, and it won't be such a chore to do anymore.

5. Get some healthy snacks that you can enjoy together. Carrot sticks, celery, or raw broccoli with a low-fat dip can be great and won't pack on the pounds. See if you can find some low calorie, low fat recipes for your favorite snacks as well.

6. If you want to lose weight, don't eat two or three large meals a day: eat six very small ones. If that's not possible, then just try to come as close as you can to that.

7. Get the whole family involved. For some of us, our exercise time conflicts with family time - so mix the two. Go hiking, skiing, or set up a little Sunday touch football. Kids have tons of energy. Use that to your advantage!

8. Go dancing. Single? Hate sports? Hit the dance floor. Dancing is a great aerobic exercise because it's easy to get lost in the music and spend hours shaking your thing.

9. Use an MP3 player. Same thing. Get one, plug in your favorite tunes and even the most repetitious chore becomes a rockin' good time.

10. Fitness vacations. The conventional wisdom is that time off is meant for lounging. Forgetaboutit! Go mountain biking in Moab! Go surfing in Fiji! Go camping! Not the outdoors type? Take a cruise and sign up for every activity you can! Or head to a beautiful location for a weekend fitness camp.

Now share your wisdom. Odds are, you know more about fitness than you think you do. Guiding other people through the journey can be super rewarding. Who knows? It might even lead to a career in the fitness industry. But wait a minute. That would be about having fun in your job, and that's an article for another time . . .

Rice to the rescue: Uncooked rice-
Coffee Grinder: It cleans and sharpens the blades at the same time.
Cell phones: If you drop them in water or your phone gets wet, put in dry, raw rice to absorb the moisture.

Salad and shine: Extra virgin olive oil-
Polishes hard wood floors.
Removes eye make-up.
Helps with squeaky doors.
Removes candle wax.

Crystal clear: Kool Aid/Crystal Light (unsweetened lemonade flavor)-
Cleans dishwashers.

Hope you are having a great week! With the deadline for filing income taxes almost here what better way to celebrate than to relish some quirky tax facts that are sure to lighten the pressure and angst of this wonderful time.

1. Billions of dollars have been lost by people who choose the standard deduction rather than itemizing. If you don’t know what you are doing, get a professional!

2. Between 1940 and 2004 the instructions for Form 1040 went from 2 pages to 79 pages. Either we left people in the dark in 1940, we overload people with information now, or the tax code has expanded beyond belief.

3. There are 2x as many tax preparers as cops, totaling in at about 1.2 million.

4. The internal revenue code is 1.4 million words+. That makes it 6x longer than War and Peace and 2x longer than the King James Bible. Could YOU make it through War and Peace six times and absorb most of it?

5. The top tax bracket has been as high as 94% and still America blossomed. In 1981 it was cut down to 50%. Currently it sits at 35%… but this is just for income. Capital gains are a different story.

6. When did we break from this tradition? In 1913. Congress passed the 16th amendment, allowing income taxes on legal income.

7. In 1916 Congress decided it would be a good financial decision to tax illegal income, too. If you can’t beat it might as well profit from it, right?!

8. So we are developing a trend… taxes are usually based loosely around war efforts. The next tax was placed on chewing gum in order to fund the Spanish-American war. They sure must have loved their chewing gum if that funded the war!

Hope your week is off to a good start! Wilmington is serving up perfect Spring weather so far and I believe it is here to stay! With tomorrow being April 1st it is advised to have your guard up for those would-be pranksters that are sure to be out in full force throughout the day. Some classic 'threats' to watch out for on April Fool's Day are stated below:

Short Sheet

This is a one of the oldest April Fool's Day pranks in the world! Take the top sheet off the victim’s bed, and tuck the bottom end under the top end of the mattress. Pull it down and then fold it back up so that the top end is where it would be if the bed was made normally. Replace the pillow, blanket, etc., and make up the bed like it was before. When the victim gets into bed, they’ll be surprised when they can’t slide their feet all the way down to the bottom of the bed!

Leave ‘Em Hanging

Quick and easy classic prank. Just wait until your victim is in the shower, then sneak in and grab their clothes and all the towels. (You might want to get the bath mat too!)

Confetti Shower

If it’s raining on April’s Fools Day: put some confetti into their umbrella, close it and wait for the victim to open it.

Salty Surprise

Simple: put salt on the victim’s toothbrush. Then stand by to watch the surprised look on their face.

Avalanche

For this prank, the victim’s bedroom door must open to the inside, and they need to be a sound sleeper. While the victim is inside the room, quietly tape newspaper across the door jam, covering it almost to the top. Then fill the gap between the newspaper and the door with Styrofoam peanuts, popped popcorn, crumpled newspaper, or even water balloons. When the victim opens the door, they’ll be greeted by an avalanche.

Door Ambush

This is the most classic and simple prank ever. Balance a small disposable cup of water on the top of a partially open door. Then wait for the splash!

Can't Catch This

Tape a dollar bill to the end of the fishing line on a fishing pole. Then hide behind a bush and wait for your victim to come along. As soon as they reach for the money, reel in the line a few inches. Keep reeling until they realize they’re being had.

Rude Awakening

Sneak up on your victim while they are sleeping and put some shaving cream in their hand. Then tickle them on the nose with a feather and watch while they give themselves a face full of foam!

All Sewed Up

Sew someone’s coat cuffs together so they can’t get their hands through. Or go through their underwear drawer and sew the legs of all their underwear closed (if you use a sewing machine, this doesn't take too long!).

Clumsy

Make your own “spilled coffee” prank. Just fill a cup with brown paint, tip it over onto waxed paper and let it flow into a puddle. Let it dry and then peel off the paper.

New growth, new life, the added optimism Spring bestows upon us through nature's beauty and blossom is priceless.

How about that snow? It seems quite a rarity in Wilmington. Fortunate for us it was short and sweet, just enough of a glimpse to appreciate it and not get 'tired' of seeing slush on our roads.

With the Winter Olympics in full swing in Vancouver, one must stop and think, what commitment and training went into each athlete for preparation of this monumental occasion. Whether talking about Shaun White or Lindsey Vonn, each of the Olympians is a prodigy in their own right. Here are some fun facts on the history of the Winter Olympics, enjoy! Have a Great Day!

1. The first Winter Olympic Games were held in Chamonix, France in 1924. Medals were awarded in only 16 events! Before 1924, figure skating and ice hockey were held at the Summer Olympics.

2. Norway has won a whopping 263 medals at the Winter Games which is more than any other nation.

3. No country in the Southern Hemisphere has ever hosted the Winter Games.

4. The United States has hosted the Winter Olympics four times; 1932 in Lake Placid, 1960 in Squaw Valley, 1980 in Lake Placid and 2000 in Salt Lake City.

8. Because of World War I and World War II, there were no Olympic Games in 1916, 1940, or 1944.

9. Fewer countries participate in the Winter Olympics than the Summer Olympics. I blame the snow and ice.

10. By the beginning of February 2010, the total cost of the Games is estimated to be $6 billion! Seems a bit much, don’t you think??

Yesterday was Groundhog Day and I hear Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow in Gobbler's Knob, Pennsylvannia. So 6 more weeks of winter is what it seems we're destined for! Here is some personal info on Mr. Punxsutawney Phil, I don't believe he wrote these facts with his paws but I heard he and the club president did a thorough Q and A session for the press, apparently some of his pals can translate Groundhogese. Enjoy!

1. Yes, Punxsutawney Phil is the only true weather forecasting groundhog. The others are just imposters.

2. There has been only one Punxsutawney Phil. Punxsutawney Phil gets his longevity from drinking “groundhog punch” (a secret recipe). One sip, which is administered every summer at the Groundhog Picnic, gives him seven more years of life.

3. On February 2nd, Phil comes out of his burrow on Gobbler’s Knob, in front of thousands of faithful followers from all over the world, to predict the weather for the rest of the winter.

4. According to legend, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If he does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring.

5. No, Punxsutawney Phil’s forecasts are not made in advance by the Inner Circle. After Phil emerges from his burrow on February 2nd, he speaks to the Groundhog Club President in Groundhogese. His proclamation is then translated for the world.

6. The celebration of Groundhog Day began with the Germans, Pennsylvania’s earliest settlers. They brought with them the legend of Candlemas Day, which states “For as the sun shines on Candlemas day, so far will the snow swirl in May…”. The settlers found that groundhogs were plentiful and were the most intelligent and sensible animal to carry on the legend of Candlemas Day.

7. Punxsutawney held its first Groundhog Day in the 1800’s. The first official trek to Gobbler’s Knob made on February 2nd, 1887. In 2008 it will be the 122nd prediction.

8. So the story goes, Punxsutawney Phil was named after King Phillip. Prior to being called Phil, he was called Br’er Groundhog.

What a week it's been, with temperatures in the mid to high 60's this week I truly hope you've had an opportunity to be out and about! 1. I think part of a best friend's job should be to
immediately clear your computer history if you die.

me if I want to save any changes to my ten-page research paper that I
swear I did not make any changes to.

14. "Do not machine wash or tumble dry" means I will never wash this --
ever.

15. I hate when I just miss a call by the last ring (Hello? Hello? Darn
it!), but when I immediately call back, it rings nine times and goes to
voicemail. What'd you do after I didn't answer? Drop the phone and run
away?

16. I hate leaving my house confident and looking good and then not
seeing anyone of importance the entire day. What a waste.

17. I keep some people's phone numbers in my phone just so I know not
to answer when they call.

18. My 4-year old son asked me in the car the other day "Dad what would
happen if you ran over a ninja?" How the hell do I respond to that?

19. I think the freezer deserves a light as well..

20. I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or
Saturday night more kisses begin with Miller Lites than Kay.

Well! It's here! 2010- a new decade... So far we're off to a cold but wonderful start here in Wilmington. Many of us set our sites high with the ever elusive New Year's resolution; some achieve the award of application and success while others....well you know the deal. Here are some statistics along with some fun 'achievable' New Years resolutions that are quite amusing-

"Did You Know" Thanksgiving:

91% of Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving Day.

Every President since Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving Day. But in 1939, 1940, and 1941 Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed Thanksgiving the third Thursday in November to length the holiday shopping season. This upset people.

Benjamin Franklin wanted the national bird to be a turkey.

If spending money on a full-blown renovation is not in your budget but you’d like to freshen a few things up around your home, here are some ideas for what you can do yourself to brighten things up for a fraction of the cost. These steps are easy and they will have dramatic results. Even better, they should take less than a couple of hours to complete.

Put some luster and shine back onto your hardwood floors: I am a big fan of natural wood floors; they are one of the only renewable surfaces you can install in your home as far as flooring goes. And they add real value to the bottom line as well. But the finish can get dull, and having them re-sanded is an inconvenience and can cost about $2 to $3 a square foot to complete.

While that’s a fraction of the cost of installing a new floor, I have a method that will cost you about $75 all in, and the finish will look brand new. First, remove all the furniture from the room you want to refinish, and then clean the floor very well with Hardwood Floor cleaner and a Micro Fiber mop. This pH-balanced cleaner is what you should be using to clean your floors regularly. Then apply floor polish. It’s actually a urethane that will fill in the small scratches. You apply it with a synthetic mop head to coat the floor. This is a water-borne finish, so the fumes are very low. Within a couple of hours the floor will be dry and will look new and shiny.

Clean your kitchen cabinets to make them look as though they have been refinished: Wood-finished cabinets can start to look tired with constant use, and while I am all for a total kitchen remodeling project, here is a tip on how to bring the look back. Spray the surface with a cleaner. This degreasing cleaner works wonderfully on breaking down the sticky residue that can be on the face of your cabinets.

Use #0000 steel wool to work the cleaner in and lift all the dirt away. Then wipe down the surface of the cabinets with a damp cotton cloth. Then use a new piece of #0000 steel wool (the more zeroes, the finer the wool) and a finish revitalizer, which should be available at your local hardware store. Apply this to the wood with a soaked-but-wrung-out piece of the steel wool, using medium pressure with the grain. This is sort of like a chemical face peel for the wood. It will brighten up the finish and level it all out. Your cabinets will look almost brand new.

Cleaning and sealing your stone countertops: There is nothing as beautiful as natural stone countertops, in my opinion. Whether in the kitchen, bathroom or other areas of your home, taking care of them will preserve their look and your investment. It’s important to clean them with a pH-balanced stone cleaner on a regular basis, but it’s even more important to seal the tops every 12 to 18 months depending on the use they receive. Remember, stone is hard but also porous, and the sealer helps to keep potential stains from sinking in.

Stone Care International makes cleaners and sealers you can apply yourself. To apply the sealer, you first need to clean the top well and caulk any areas of separation with a clear acrylic caulking. Once dry, apply the sealer by spraying the surface until it is wet. In a few minutes you will see the edges of the counter start to dry. Once that occurs, re-spray the top and let dry for several hours. Then your stone is sealed and if a child spills grape juice or you miss with the salad dressing, you do not have to worry about ruining your stone countertop.

Thanks for stopping by to check out my BLOG! I hope everyone is geared up and ready for Fall. Time to put away those summer clothes and bring out the jackets, the weather is cooling off, and the leaves are changing!

This past Saturday, September 19, I completed the YMCA Triathlon (Sprint) at Wrightsville Beach with 19 of my co-workers! The triathlon consisted of a 1500 meter swim, 12.4 mile bike ride, and a 3.1 mile run! I was able to complete my goal and finished the race feeling confident. Now, a few days later, I'm feeling great and very refreshed. Check this out and search for my name to see just how well I did!

Salvaging summer standouts is not only a great way to cut costs, it will also help you get a jump start on your fall wardrobe. In fact, you’ll be surprised at how many of summer’s best pieces are poised to transition into fall as seamlessly as the leaves on the trees.

Re-think: Florals
Though summer flowers may be wilting away, florals are still in full bloom when it comes to fashion! While this trend has traditionally been reserved for spring and summer, it will still be going strong all fall and winter, so take advantage of the blossoming pieces already inside your closet. "Top 10 Tips to Turn Your House into a Show Home"

While it's tough to be objective about your own home, here are some tips you can use to get your house ready to sell. A Staging Diva Graduate Home Stager brings a designer eye to the finishing touches of creating your "show home."

What is a "Show Home"?

Home Staging (also called House Fluffing, House Primping, Real Estate Staging) is the art of decorating a home to sell quickly and for top dollar. From recommending wall colors, repairs and decluttering, to careful arrangement of furniture, art and accessories; we guide you through the process to do it yourself. To get the most for your home, you need potential buyers (and their agents) to feel it's a "hot property".

The 10 low cost tips below will get you started. Even if you're not moving, you will find they make your home more relaxing and enjoyable to live in.

1. Consider the curb appeal.

Landscaping is nice, but not in everyone's budget. At minimum, lawns should be freshly mowed, leaves raked, or snow shoveled. Consider a hanging or potted plant for the entrance. Sweep the porch, deck and all walk ways and ensure garbage and recycling are tucked neatly away from the front of the house.

Scrub your front door, porch, outside railings and steps. This is cheaper than repainting and makes a world of difference. Once the outside entrance is clean, decide if the paint really needs a touch up.

2. Get rid of clutter!

Pick one closet or area at a time so the task isn't as daunting. Look at every item with a very critical eye and ask yourself why you're keeping it.


Remember that how you live in your home and how you sell your house are two entirely different things. You're going for a "show home" look!

Forget about hanging onto items for a garage sale. Pick your favorite charity and donate it. You paid for these things long ago, why not just give them away to others who REALLY need them?

You'll probably have to edit the same closets a number of times to really whittle them down to the "essentials". If rooms and closets still look cramped, rent a storage locker.


Removing clutter is an important starting point. A home staging professional will also know how to draw attention to the room's best features and create a focal point, as seen here in a home office staged by Debra Gould.

3. Turn excess inventory into cash.

If you have a collection of items for projects you never got around to, return them. This also applies to the two-year supply of light bulbs, canned goods or paper products sitting in your basement. Without a receipt you won't get cash, but you will have a store credit that you can use once you move. Less clutter and less stuff to pack, move and unpack again!

4. Watch where the eye goes.

There are speedy and low cost solutions to many of the little problems that together make a home seem shabbier than it needs to.

Walk along each corridor and into every room and check where your eye is drawn (better yet, ask a critical friend or family member). If the eye is drawn to the chipped white paint on the door frame, take some "white out" and fill it in. If it's those old nail holes in the wall, see if you can hang a picture to cover them.

Glue any peeling wallpaper. If it's really horrible and you can't afford the time or money to fix it properly, hang pictures and strategically place baskets. You won't cover the problem entirely (which would be wrong anyway), but you will draw your audience's attention away from the problem and onto something more visually pleasing to focus on.

5. Find a fix-it person.

Ensure cupboards open and shut and that no taps are dripping. Look in all rooms for things you never got around to fixing and decide which ones might be distracting to potential buyers. No, it's not OK for door handles to fall off, even if you have learned to ignore it!

6. Clean, clean and clean again.

Most mortals can't live in a spotless environment all the time. This can be one of the more stressful aspects of having your home on the market— but it's worth the effort to sell your home for top dollar. You can hire a professional service to come in and deep clean everything; then take 20-30 minutes each day to maintain it.


Don't neglect hallways. They lead potential buyers through your home and should be bright and clutter free. Remember you're trying to maximize the feeling of space in your home!

Appliances should sparkle even if you're not including them with the house. After all, you might throw them in later as a negotiating tool. Counter tops, taps, sinks and bathtubs should be shiny and free of water spots. If you have a pedestal sink, don't forget the dust that collects on top of the plumbing where it attaches to the wall. If the whole sink is spotless and the taps aren't dripping, it will look new!

Dust shelves and vacuum or "Swiffer" the floors. Naturally, all beds should be made. At a recent open house for a home listed over $500,000 (and over 60 days on the market), they hadn't even bothered with these two simple steps! It made you wonder what bigger things had been neglected.

Remember clean windows let in more light and look newer. Hire a service if you have to— it's worth the investment.

If all this attention to detail seems over the top, remember that a very clean home leaves the impression that the house is well cared for. This helps put buyers at ease— especially a first time buyer who may be worried about the responsibilities of owning a house.

7. Let in some air.

Open some windows for at least 10 minutes. There is nothing worse than walking into a stuffy house or one that smells of smoke and pet odors.

8. Let in some light.

It might be mood lighting to you, but if you're trying to sell your home, keep it bright! Dimly lit rooms tend to look small and dingy— especially during the day. If you have a particularly dark room, consider investing in a floor lamp that will bounce light off the ceiling.

If your walls are so dark that they're sucking up all the light, consider repainting. You can even buy a small can of a lighter shade of your wall color, mix it with glaze and rub it onto the wall. It will reflect light and give the room a more open feeling. This approach saves much of the preparation and clean up involved in repainting.

9. Don't forget fresh flowers.

You don't need to spend a fortune to have fresh flowers throughout your home. Even a daisy in a bud vase brightens a bathroom counter. Ask your florist which blooms last a week. You can also use potted flowering plants that are in season for a low-cost solution. Don't use plastic or obviously fake flowers, especially in an expensive home!

10. Carefully consider music.

Soft background music can help create a soothing environment and camouflage neighbor and traffic noise. But make sure the volume is very low. Blaring TVs are definitely a no-no, but you'd be surprised how many people leave them on for showings!

Home decorators who once would have dropped thousands of dollars on designer furniture are now, in a down economy, looking at inexpensive, self-assembly pieces from big-box stores as a jumping-off point for more custom designs.

Tis' the season for family vacations and romantic getaways. Find out ways you can save money at the airport so, you'll have more for your vacation!

Like just about every other airline passenger this summer, Elizabeth Rodgers wants to avoid any unnecessary fees. So on a recent flight from Los Angeles to Boise, Idaho, she tried to carry all of her luggage on the plane.

She didn’t get far.

As Rodgers boarded the cramped regional jet, passengers were being asked to gate-check most of their carry-ons. A flight attendant tagged her extra bag without charging her $15. “I checked it for free,” says Rodgers, a technology writer based in Los Angeles.

Sidestepping this year-old airline rule was pretty easy up to this point. Flight attendants and gate agents routinely waved passengers with too much luggage through, hoping to avoid a confrontation. But now that baggage fees are generating serious money — they accounted for $1.5 billion in 2008, according to the Transportation Department — airlines are less likely to let the surplus bags slide.

For example:

US Airways this month began charging $5 on top of its $15 fee for a first checked bag if you don’t pay for it in advance.
Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines started charging $50 for the second checked bag on flights to Europe.
Alaska Airlines added a checked-bag fee, too: $15 for the first bag, $25 for the second.

Airlines are spinning the changes in a clever way. My favorite explanation comes from US Airways, which rationalized its new fee as a way to offer customers “the convenience of prepaying to check their bags online.”

It’s clear that airlines are depending on ancillary revenues in general, and luggage fees in particular, more than ever. Meaning air travelers must be more vigilant than ever about avoiding them. The days of passengers like Rodgers eluding a $15 or $50 fee are numbered. A proposed new law would see to that. It tasks the Transportation Security Administration with limiting the number of carry-ons travelers can bring through security checkpoints. Not hard to see the airline industry’s fingerprints all over that bill.

What to do?

1. Bring less.
Obviously, the best way to avoid paying for a checked bag is not to bring one in the first place. “Keep your bags as light as possible,” advises Barbara DesChamps, author of “It’s In The Bag: The Complete Guide to Lightweight Travel.” How can you tell if your luggage is overweight? I’ve been testing a Balanzza digital luggage scale that’s very portable and, at a $24.99 list price, doesn’t break the bank. Don’t take this advice too far, though. Pack a change of clothes, and for goodness sakes, wear something on the plane. US Airways passenger Keith Wright might have benefitted from that advice. He disrobed on a recent flight from Charlotte to Los Angeles, and ended up in the slammer.

2. Fly a no-fee airline.
JetBlue Airways doesn’t charge for the first checked bag. Neither does Southwest Airlines. In fact, it doesn’t charge for a second bag, either. Both of these companies have acknowledged what the rest of us already know: People travel with at least one bag. Shouldn’t we be rewarding these airlines with our business?

3. Look for loopholes.
They still exist. For example, US Airways exempts all of its frequent fliers, passengers traveling to and from Europe or Asia, Star Alliance Silver and Gold status members, unaccompanied minors, first class passengers and active duty military. Is anyone left? Mark Mitchell, American Airlines’ managing director of customer experience, recently told me that only 1 in 4 passengers pay luggage fees.

4. Ask someone else to pay.
Hotels are mindful that first-bag fees can hurt their business, so they’re offering to cover the fees. One of the first was Kimpton hotels. My friends over at Amelia Island, Fla., have a new program called “Pack Your Bags for Amelia Island” that offers air travelers an $80 room credit for checked baggage fees. If you have to pay for a checked bag, why not pass the bill off to someone else?

5. Get creative.
Passengers like Carolina Moore, a marketing consultant in North Las Vegas, Nev., are finding interesting ways of avoiding the fees. When she flew with her nine-month-old son recently, she discovered that consolidating her purse, diaper bag, car seat and port-a-crib into two large (and barely legal) bags allowed her to avoid paying the $15 fee. “So, I guess I didn’t really break any of the rules,” she says. “I just stretched them to capacity.”

6. Exploit policy differences.
Airlines don’t have uniform luggage rules, so when you’re flying on two or more airlines, use that to your advantage. Consider what happened to Kristi Nelson when she flew from Oahu to Portland recently. A Hawaiian Air agent in Lihue asked if she wanted to check her bags all the way through to the mainland. “You bet I do,” she said. “I thought for a minute and wondered how we would pay the baggage fee for our Northwest flight from Honolulu.” But when she landed, no one bothered to charge her.

7. Mail it.
Federal Express, UPS, the postal service, or a company like Luggage Forward can help you avoid the fees, but often, these options cost far more than what the airlines are charging. Then again, they’re probably more reliable. An overnight delivery service is far less likely to lose your belongings.

You're supposed to watch saturated fat and eat lots of vegetables—that's why you usually pick up a salad for lunch and dinner (even when the kids get burgers). But you're not obsessed with the scale like some women you know. You brush your teeth twice a day, and you last flossed, oh, maybe 2 weeks ago. You exercise but avoid lifting so you don't bulk up. The tummy pains you got last week? Must have been gas—nothing serious. And hey, you'd like to get 8 hours of sleep, but the days are short, and it's hard to get everything done. Sound familiar? These so-called "good" habits may actually be derailing your health. Here, experts share the surprising things you're doing wrong—and how to recover.

1. You always order a salad
Don't assume that bowl of lettuce is always the healthiest menu pick.

Truth is, a lot of take-out and restaurant salads are basically a burger in a bowl, says Brie Turner-McGrievy, RD, clinical research coordinator for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) in Washington, DC. That's because add-ons like fried chicken, croutons, and full-fat dressing pack major calories, fat, sodium, and other unhealthy nutrients. One example: McDonald's Bacon Ranch Salad with Crispy Chicken and Newman's Own Ranch Dressing has 540 calories and 35 grams of fat; a Big Mac has 540 calories and 29 grams.

The Fix: Don't scratch take-out salad off your menu; just use a few commonsense rules before you order. Avoid high-fat add-ons such as sour cream, extra cheese, croutons, bacon bits, and creamy dressings like Caesar and ranch. Opt for salads that aren't just a fiber-free mound of iceberg lettuce dotted with a few carrot and red cabbage shavings. And plan ahead: Most fast-food chains supply nutritional info online so you can scout out the best options before you leave.

2. You avoid the scale
For some women, this is the only thing in the house gathering more dust than the treadmill.

Doctors call scale-phobia an avoidance behavior. The idea behind it: If I don't know for sure that I gained weight, maybe I didn't. You're most likely to duck the scale after a few days, weeks, or months of eating whatever you want. "For some people, getting back on the scale can be a help," says Kelly Brownell, PhD, director of the Yale Center for Eating and Weight Disorders. "The trick is knowing whether or not it will motivate you." But if you're trying to lose weight or maintain weight loss, you may need the kind of feedback the scale provides, says Brownell. If you weigh yourself regularly, you can notice a gain when it's easier to shed—at 3 pounds, say, instead of 15. But it's important not to get so obsessed with the numbers that you're weighing yourself once or twice daily. Your weight can vary from day to day, even hour to hour.

The Fix: If you're trying to lose weight, get on the scale monthly. Do it first thing in the morning, naked, after you use the bathroom, and at the same time in your menstrual cycle—not when you're likely to have water-weight gain. If you're maintaining weight you've recently lost, hop on at least once a week. That's how the biggest "losers" in the National Weight Control Registry—the largest study of people who've been successful at long-term weight loss—stay slim. Don't freak out over anything less than a 5-pound gain; that's a normal fluctuation. But if you find yourself drifting higher than that, it's time to rein yourself.

3. You wear contacts no matter what
It's safer to switch to glasses when you're under the weather.

Fighting a cold? If you normally wear contacts, switch to eyeglasses. Your eyes don't work as well when you're sick, say researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry. A decline in tear production makes contact lens wearers more prone to conjunctivitis—a.k.a. pinkeye. So can using antihistamine meds, which also dry out eyes.

The Fix: Wear your specs until you're feeling better, experts advise, or switch to daily-wear disposable lenses

4. You assume home cooking is always healthier
Making your own meals is usually healthier than takeout, but your cookbook may not be as slimming as you think.

Beware the creeping-calorie trend among time-tested recipes: When food scientists at Cornell University analyzed the 18 recipes that have appeared in each edition of The Joy of Cooking—the iconic cookbook, updated every 10 years since 1936—they found that the average calories per serving have increased nearly 40%. Even though the dishes—such as macaroni and cheese, chicken a la king, brownies, and apple pie—are essentially the same, richer ingredients and larger serving sizes have inflated calorie counts.

The Fix: Use our portion control finder to make sure you can gauge realistic meal sizes; then freeze leftovers in individual containers so you eat one portion at a time, not two or three.

5. Your faucet's always at the same temperature
When you cook or drink, keep it cool. When you wash your hands, turn up the heat.

When you're soaping up after the bathroom, warm-to-hot water is necessary to kill germs. But when you're quenching your thirst or prepping a meal, make sure to draw water from the cold tap. Hot water is likely to contain higher levels of lead, says the EPA, because it dissolves the toxic metal in plumbing more quickly than cold water does. About 15% of our lead exposure in the United States comes from drinking water. High blood lead levels have been linked to a host of health problems. Just 4 ug/dl (micrograms per deciliter) can double your risk of a fatal heart attack or stroke, and similar levels may cause memory loss, says Eliseo Guallar, MD, PhD, an epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins.

The Fix: If you haven't turned on the faucet for 6 hours or more, let it run cold for a minute before using, the EPA advises—and use only water filters bearing a seal from NSF International, a company that certifies products' lead-removing abilities.

6. Your friends have bad health habits
With friends like these, you may need to watch your waistline.

If a close pal had an unhealthy amount of weight gain, your chances of packing on pounds increase by 57%, found one Harvard University study; if that friend is the same gender as you, odds rise by 71%. Having heavyset friends around appears to stretch your own notion of what's acceptable for body size, says lead author Nicholas Christakis, MD, PhD, allowing weight gain to spread like a disease through social networks. Your pals can affect how much you drink too. If your work friends frequent the local happy hour, you may give yourself permission to overindulge at home. University of Texas researchers found that people were 82% more likely to be heavy drinkers when their coworkers held liberal views about alcohol.

The Fix: Maintain your own beliefs about what is healthy—and avoid being swayed by friends and their weight gain. "Those around us can influence us in ways we don't realize," says Christakis. If your friends are sharing unhealthy apps at dinner, order the usual healthy choice you would have with a different crowd.

7. You drive with the windows down
Commuting may be hazardous to your lungs.

University of Southern California scientists studied urban commuters and found that though they spend only 6% of their day in the car, during that time they're exposed to up to 45% of the air pollutants they encounter in a 24-hour period. That makes getting to work in car-centric cities the second biggest weekday health risk—topped only by smoking.

The Fix: During a trafficky commute, driving with windows shut and air recirculating helps somewhat, say researchers; taking a train or biking on less busy roads can have an even healthier impact.

8. You don't check your doctor's track record
Having an operation? An overachieving surgeon could save your life.

A review of the medical records of 474,000 surgery patients found that their doctors' experience was the strongest predictor of who survived and who didn't. This result overturns long-held advice that simply choosing a high-volume hospital (one that does a lot of procedures) ensures the safest surgery. Two examples: Pancreatic cancer patients were nearly 4 times more likely to die after surgery, and heart valve—replacement patients were 44 percent more likely to die, when the procedures were performed by less experienced doctors, compared with more practiced surgeons.

The Fix: To check your surgeon's experience, call her office and ask: Is she a fellow of the American College of Surgeons? Is she board certified in her specialty? How many surgeries of the type you need has she performed in the past year? How does her success rate compare with the national average? Has she ever had to pay to settle a malpractice claim or been disciplined by a hospital or a state medical licensing board?
